Inspired to Create- A Chat with Jodi Ohl

I’m a lover of books and art books always have a prominent placement on my shelf. I first discovered Jodi Ohl when I purchased Abstracts in Acrylic and Ink. It was a book I used as a guide to create many colorful and fun paintings. I also signed up for her online classes. What a treat!

I started following Jodi on social media and was so inspired by her  incredible series of works. I finally met Jodi through Stephanie Gagos’ online auctions. She is so passionate about her creations and I’m thrilled to own several of her pieces. She has been so kind to share her knowledge and experiences with me as I’ve built my art business. I’m thrilled she is my guest in our upcoming Inspired to Create Chat

Jodi’s Bio

Jodi Ohl is a best-selling author, award winning mixed media artist and creative instructor, originally from Dunkirk, NY, who now resides in Aberdeen, NC. Having left her day job in 2011 to pursue her artistic career full time, she has built a body of work that is known for its distinctive texture, bold color combinations which are often whimsical or abstract compositions, as well as motivational in nature.

Jodi’s best-selling book, “Abstracts in Acrylic and Ink”was released by North Light Books in late 2016  and she is currently working on a variety of new writing and video projects. Combining her approachable teaching and writing style, Abstract in Acrylic and Ink, is much like having a seat next to the artist at one of her popular workshops.  Jodi welcomes visitors to her website  Jodi Ohl  (www.jodiohl.com)  where you can find a full listing of classes, weekly musings, and additional artwork for sale.  Be a part of the inner circle by subscribing to her newsletter by clicking HERE.

Do you have any special projects coming up?

I’m currently working on a multi-week online workshop (currently in session) which runs through mid-March.  If anyone is interested in jumping in and joining us-you can still do so as I will be leaving it open ended as an evergreen course.  Or, I will run another live session in the fall.  You can find more information here:  https://jodiohl.thinkific.com/courses/pre-sale-abstract-interactive

I will also be producing a few short, more project based online classes coming up later in the year.  If anyone wants to stay abreast of the newest courses and other upcoming events, I have a newsletter geared towards students over here:  http://eepurl.com/g7dB-5   Or my general newsletter has a bit of student news and upcoming art sales or new collection releases.  Both newsletters offer creative inspiration:  http://eepurl.com/g7dzeH

Another project I’m really excited about is my first 5 day in person workshop coming up in March called “Abstract Immersive”.  It will be in Santa Fe, New Mexico and hosted by the Madeline Island School of the Arts.   More information about that multi-day workshop can be found over here:  https://www.madelineartschool.com/instructors/instructor-list/jodi-ohl/

My long-term goal is to write a follow up book to Abstracts in Acrylic and Ink.  I hope to start working on that again in the Spring. Stay tuned!

Have you worked in cold wax?

YES! I’ve worked in Cold Wax and Oil for about 5 years or so. I absolutely love it and teach that

In person from time to time  (2 x this year), and I have my online class “Abstracts in Cold Wax and Oil” which I produced about 4 years ago.  I love the texture you can achieve and history of marks that can be revealed. It pretty much checks all the boxes of what I love most about painting. Incorporated into my in-person classes is using a lot more brighter colors and some whimsical compositions, which is a bit of different spin that you see from a lot of CW artists, but in line with other genres of art that I create.

Thank you everyone for joining in on the chat and a huge thank you to Jennifer Steck for having me on her program!   I had a wonderful time with you all!

Cheers!
